The game was originally released in Japan under the name "It's a Wonderful World" (すばらしきこのせかい Subarashiki Kono Sekai, literally translated to "This Wonderful World").

The game is an action RPG developed by Japanese developers, Square Enix. The same team behind the Kingdom Hearts series and Jupiter for the DS.

The story is set in the modern-day setting of the Shibuya district of Tokyo, Japan. The setting and feel of the Shibuya shopping distric was ephasized in the game with it's aesthetics and culture.

The World Ends With You's design was inspired by Square Enix's previous game, Kingdom Heats: Chain of Memories.

In the game you play as Neku Sakuraba. Neku (you) are forced to participate in a game that will ultimately decide their fate.
